But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man. — Luke 21:36
Luke 21:36
Observation
Jesus does not call you to a sleepy, passive faith. His final instruction here is a direct command with a clear purpose. He tells you to stay awake and to pray, not just sometimes, but “at all times.” This is not about frantic activity but about a constant state of spiritual readiness. The goal of this vigilance is specific: to receive strength. Strength to endure the trials that will come, and even more importantly, strength to be found ready and unashamed when you finally stand in His presence.
Reflection
This command might feel heavy, but look closely at where the strength comes from. Jesus doesn’t say, “Be strong.” He says, “Pray that you may have strength.” Your watchfulness is not a product of your own willpower. It is a result of your dependence on Him. He is the source of your endurance. Through prayer, as one early pastor noted, Christ Himself makes you strong and sets you above the snares you face. You can face today and all your tomorrows not with fear, but with a quiet confidence that He will provide all you need. Will you ask Him now for the strength to simply stand?
Sit With This
Your strength to stand tomorrow is found in your dependent prayer today.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess that my heart often grows weary and I forget to watch. Awaken my spirit and turn my gaze toward You, my source of strength. Help me to live in prayerful dependence today, so that I may be ready to stand before You. Amen.
Did You Know?
In the ancient world, to “stand before” a king meant you were found worthy to be in their service and presence, having been granted access and approval.
