Freely you have received; freely give. — Matthew 10:8
Matthew 10:8
Observation
What is the true cost of ministry? Jesus sends His disciples out with immense spiritual authority. They can heal the sick, raise the dead, and cleanse lepers. These are world-altering powers. Yet, He gives one simple financial rule. Do not charge for what cost you nothing. The power they were given was a free gift from God. Therefore, the ministry flowing from that power must also be a free gift to others. Their work was not a transaction. It was a demonstration of God's un-buyable grace.
Reflection
God has given you everything in Christ. Salvation was not for sale. His forgiveness came without a price tag. His Spirit was given, not loaned. You have received the greatest treasures in the universe, all by grace. So how can you hold tightly to what you have? John Chrysostom saw this command as God's way of freeing His children from the love of money. When you give freely of your time, your resources, and your love, you are acting like your Father. You are showing the world His heart. Where is God asking you to open your hand today?
Sit With This
What gift have you received from God that you can freely give to someone else today?
Prayer
Father, thank You for the lavish gift of Your Son. Forgive me for when I treat Your grace like a commodity to be hoarded. Help me to give to others as freely and generously as You have given to me. Amen.
Did You Know?
In the ancient world, healers and exorcists often charged high fees for their services. Jesus' command for His disciples to minister for free was a radical departure from this cultural norm.
