1 Thessalonians 5:21-22

The Good You Can Trust

but test everything; hold fast what is good. — 1 Thessalonians 5:21

1 Thessalonians 5:21

Observation

Are you more willing to believe than to test? Paul writes to the young church in Thessalonica, urging them toward mature faith. He gives a two-part command for spiritual survival. First, examine everything you hear. Second, cling tightly to what proves to be good. This is not a call to be critical of everyone and everything. It is a call to be a careful guardian of the truth. In a world of many voices, Paul insists that believers must be discerning to stay grounded in the gospel.

Reflection

You live in a world full of competing voices, and it can be hard to know what to believe. God does not want you living in fear of deception. He invites you into a quiet confidence. This confidence comes from learning to test what you hear against the unchanging truth of His Word. Cyprian, a church leader in the third century, saw this as a shepherd’s work: to lovingly protect the flock from anything harmful. The Holy Spirit is your guide in this. He will give you wisdom. What good thing, rooted in God, can you hold onto today?

Sit With This

True discernment is not about finding fault, but about finding and holding fast to God's goodness.

Prayer

Father, give me wisdom to see things as You see them. Help me to test what I hear against Your truth, and grant me the strength to cling only to what is good. Amen.

Did You Know?

Thessalonica was a busy port city on a major Roman road. Its constant flow of new people and ideas made spiritual discernment a critical, daily skill for the believers who lived there.
