For the love of Christ compels us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; — 2 Corinthians 5:14
2 Corinthians 5:14
Observation
Have you ever done the right thing for the wrong reason? Paul gives a single, pure motivation for his entire ministry. It is not ambition, duty, or fear. It is the love of Christ. This love is so powerful that it acts like a force, compelling him forward. Paul’s logic is simple: if one died for all, then all died with him. His death counted for us. This is a settled conviction, a truth that now defines his reality and reorders his life. Everything he does flows from this one unshakeable fact.
Reflection
So often we try to serve God out of our own strength. We feel the pressure to perform, the guilt of not doing enough, or the desire for recognition. But God invites you into a different way of living. His love for you is not a weight to carry, but a current to carry you. John Chrysostom saw this death as a beautiful exchange, where we hand over our old life to receive a new one in Christ. You are no longer living for yourself. You can trust that His love is enough to guide you, sustain you, and motivate you. What would change if you let His love, not your effort, be the engine of your day?
Sit With This
In what small way today can you act not from a sense of duty, but purely as a response to the great love Christ has for you?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you that your love is not a pressure but a power. Forgive me for trying to work for you out of my own ambition or fear. May your great love for me be the one thing that compels me today. Amen.
