Matthew 5:14-16

Let Your Light Shine

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. — Matthew 5:16

Matthew 5:16

Observation

No one lights a lamp just to hide it. Jesus uses two simple, powerful images for His followers: a city on a hill and a lamp on a stand (v. 14-15). Both are impossible to ignore. A city built on a high place is a landmark, visible for miles. A lamp is meant to fill a room with light. Jesus is clear: your life in Him is not meant to be a secret. Its purpose is to be seen, so that when people see your good works, they give glory not to you, but to your Father in heaven (v. 16).

Reflection

Your life is not meant to be lived in the shadows. The light Jesus speaks of is not something you have to manufacture. It is His life shining in you. Your only job is to get out of the way and let it be seen. An early pastor, John Chrysostom, wisely noted that Jesus wants us to let *our light* shine, not to show off *our life*. The focus is always on the source. When people see your good works, they are seeing God's goodness at work in you. You can trust Him to make His glory known through your simple, faithful obedience. In what small way can you stop hiding His light today?

Sit With This

Your good works are not about earning approval but about reflecting the Father's glory to a world in darkness.

Prayer

Father, thank you that Your light lives in me through Jesus. Help me not to hide it out of fear or pride, but to live openly so that others see You. May my life bring glory to Your name alone. Amen.

Did You Know?

The "lamp" Jesus mentions was a small, clay oil lamp. The "basket" was likely a common clay measuring bowl which, if placed over the lamp, would quickly suffocate its flame.
