Colossians 4:5-6

Speech Seasoned with Grace

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. — Colossians 4:6

Colossians 4:6

Observation

Have you ever regretted the way you spoke to someone? Paul writes to believers living as a minority in a skeptical culture. He urges them to act with wisdom toward "those who are outside" (v. 5). The days are evil, so time is precious and every conversation is an opportunity. Therefore, their speech must be consistently gracious and have substance. This was not a suggestion for special occasions. It was a command for every interaction, enabling them to respond to each individual person, not with a script, but with tailored, wise words.

Reflection

It can feel like a heavy burden to always have the right answer. But God does not ask you to be a master debater. He asks you to be a vessel for His grace. Notice that knowing how to answer follows from your speech being full of grace. God provides the wisdom when your heart is postured in love. As an early pastor taught, salt both adds flavor and prevents decay; so your words should make truth palatable and preserve goodness. You can trust the Holy Spirit. He will give you the words you need in the moment you need them. What one relationship needs that grace from you today?

Sit With This

In your next conversation with someone outside the faith, focus more on asking a good question than on giving the right answer.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, forgive me for my harsh and careless words. Fill my heart with Your grace so that my speech reflects You. Give me Your wisdom to answer others with love and truth today. Amen.

Did You Know?

Salt was so valuable in the Roman world that soldiers were sometimes paid in it. This payment was called a *salarium*, the origin of our modern word “salary.”
