Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, — Colossians 3:23
Colossians 3:23
Observation
Does your work on Monday feel disconnected from your worship on Sunday? Paul is writing to ordinary believers, including slaves. He commands them to work with total sincerity. This instruction elevates every task. It redefines the 'boss' as the Lord Jesus Christ Himself (Colossians 3:24). Your true employer is not a person but the King of Kings. Therefore, the standard for your work is not what gets you by, but what honors Him. The motivation shifts from human approval to divine reward, an inheritance from the Lord.
Reflection
God sees your work. He sees the effort you pour into tasks that no one else notices. He does not distinguish between sacred and secular jobs. He only distinguishes between work done for Him and work done for men. John Chrysostom saw how this truth gave dignity to the lowest slave, making his service a direct offering to God. Your desk, your kitchen, or your workshop can be an altar. Your faithfulness in the small things is worship in His eyes. You can trust Him to see your heart and to be your great Rewarder. What one task today can you offer to Him with a new heart?
Sit With This
Today, work not for a paycheck or a promotion, but for an audience of One.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, forgive me for working for human approval instead of for You. Help me see my job today through Your eyes, as a holy assignment from my true Master. Make my labor an act of love for You. Amen.
Did You Know?
In the Roman world, about one-third of the population were slaves. Paul’s instruction gave them immense dignity, reframing their forced labor as direct service to Christ with a guaranteed heavenly inheritance.
