And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, — Hebrews 10:24
Hebrews 10:24
Observation
Have you ever felt your spiritual fire growing dim? The writer gives a direct command to combat this. We are to actively consider, to strategize, how to motivate each other. This is not a passive activity. He contrasts this intentional encouragement with the dangerous 'habit of some' who were abandoning meeting together. The gathering of believers is presented as the essential place where this stirring up happens. The reason for this urgency is the approaching 'Day' of the Lord's return (Hebrews 10:25). Fellowship is God's provision for perseverance.
Reflection
It is easy to feel isolated in your walk with God, but He never intended for you to go it alone. His design for you is the local church, a family that helps you keep going when you feel weak. John Chrysostom pictured a Christian like a burning coal; when separated from the fire, it quickly grows cold. Together, the coals keep each other hot. God provides His people to be His hands and voice of encouragement for you. He is faithful to use them to sharpen your faith, and to use you to sharpen theirs. Who can you intentionally encourage in love today?
Sit With This
Who has God placed in your life to intentionally stir up to love and good works this week?
Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times I have isolated myself and neglected the family You have given me. Help me to see my brothers and sisters as Your gift to sharpen my love for You and for them. Use me to encourage someone this day. Amen.
Did You Know?
Early Christian gatherings, often held in private homes, were a defiant act of faith in a hostile Roman world. To neglect meeting was not just a social choice but a step away from a courageous community.
