For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, — Romans 12:4
Romans 12:4
Observation
Have you ever felt like you did not belong? Paul uses the human body to show the Roman believers their place. He says we are all connected in one body, Christ's body. Each part is different. Each part has a unique job. This was a powerful picture for a church full of Jews and Gentiles who struggled to get along. Paul is not just suggesting unity. He is stating a fact. In Christ, you are already part of one another.
Reflection
You are not an isolated Christian. God designed you for connection. He placed you in His body with a specific purpose that no one else can fulfill. John Chrysostom once said an eye cannot be an eye if it is not part of the body. You find your true function when you are connected to others. Your belonging is not based on your performance or personality. It is sealed by Christ. God is faithful to hold you in His family. What part has He called you to play today?
Sit With This
Who is one person in your church family you can encourage today, reminding them that they belong?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for making me a part of Your body. Forgive me for the times I try to live on my own and neglect the people You have placed around me. Help me to love and serve Your church today. Amen.
Did You Know?
Roman society had many clubs or guilds called collegia. Paul’s idea of the church as a single, living body with interdependent parts was a completely different and more intimate vision of community.
