Colossians 3:14

The Bond of Perfectness

And above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfectness. — Colossians 3:14

Colossians 3:14

Observation

What holds all your good intentions together? Paul gives a final, crowning instruction. After listing virtues like kindness and forgiveness, he says to put on love “above all these things.” This is not an afterthought. Love is presented as the supreme garment, the one piece that holds the entire outfit of Christian character in place. Without it, the other virtues can become disconnected or even prideful. It is the essential, unifying element.

Reflection

God does not ask you to manufacture this love on your own. It is a gift, a fruit of His Spirit working within you (Galatians 5:22). Think of it this way: all other virtues, without love, are like cold, lifeless limbs. One early pastor taught that love is what animates them and gives them purpose. It is the very love of Christ that holds you together, making you whole. You can trust Him to supply this love as you abide in Him. What one area of your life needs the binding love of Christ today?

Sit With This

Today, view every act of kindness not as an isolated duty, but as an expression of the love that binds you to Christ.

Prayer

Father, thank you that your love is not just a feeling but the very power that holds me together. Clothe me in your love today, so that every action and thought is bound up in you. May I show your perfect love to others. Amen.

Did You Know?

In the Greco-Roman world, philosophers also listed virtues. Paul’s list is unique because it places love not just as one virtue among many, but as the supreme, unifying principle that perfects all the others.
