But the greatest among you will be your servant. — Matthew 23:11
Matthew 23:11
Observation
Jesus turns the world’s ladder of success completely upside down. He is speaking directly to His followers, warning them against the pride of the religious leaders who loved public honor. The Pharisees believed greatness meant being served, admired, and given titles. In this single, direct statement, Jesus dismantles that entire framework. He establishes a new, counter-cultural standard for His kingdom. True greatness is not about being first or being seen. It is about choosing to place yourself last in order to lift others up. This is not a suggestion; it is a core principle of following Him.
Reflection
Friend, do you feel the pressure to climb? To get ahead, to be noticed, to secure your position? Jesus offers you a different path, a better way. He says true significance is found not in being served, but in serving. John Chrysostom saw this humility not as a weakness, but as the very 'mother of all virtues.' God does not measure you by your title or your influence. He sees your heart. He honors the quiet act of service done for His sake. Can you trust Him that your worth is secure in Him, freeing you to serve without needing anything in return?
Sit With This
Where can I choose to be a servant today, especially when my pride wants to be served?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I seek my own honor instead of looking for ways to serve. Help me find my whole identity in You, so I can freely and joyfully become a servant to others. Give me Your heart for people today. Amen.
Did You Know?
The Pharisees Jesus addressed would often wear exaggeratedly large phylacteries and long tassels on their robes to display their piety and status, a practice He directly condemned.
