The Promise in Confession

Have you ever tried to hide a stain instead of cleaning it? John presents us with God’s perfect remedy for the stain of sin. He gives a simple, powerful condition followed by a certain, twofold promise. The condition is, 'If we confess our sins.' This is not a suggestion but the key that unlocks the promise. It requires honesty and humility before a holy God. The promise rests entirely on God's character, not ours. He is 'faithful and just.' He is faithful to His own covenant promises to forgive those who come to Him through His Son. He is also just. This seems strange. How can a just God simply forgive wrongdoing? He is just because the penalty for our sin was fully paid by Jesus Christ on the cross. Therefore, God’s justice is satisfied. On that basis, He does two things for us. First, He forgives our sins, removing the guilt and penalty. Second, He cleanses us from all unrighteousness, beginning the work of washing away the sin’s defilement from our character.

This promise from God is one of the most freeing in all of Scripture. Think about it. God is not waiting to condemn you. He is waiting to forgive you. His response to your honest confession is not anger or disappointment. It is faithfulness. He will do exactly what He promised to do every single time. Your sin does not surprise Him, and it does not diminish His love for you. So often, we run from God when we sin. We hide in shame, thinking we need to clean ourselves up before we can approach Him. But this verse says the opposite. The only way to get clean is to come to Him just as you are, with the stain fully exposed. Your part is simply to agree with Him about it. To call it what He calls it. That is confession. It is stepping out of the darkness of denial and into the light of His truth. When you do this, you can trust Him completely. He will not only pardon your sin, He will begin to purify your heart. His forgiveness is not just a legal transaction. It is a relational restoration. He removes the very thing that stands between you and Him. What lie are you believing today that keeps you from confessing freely to your faithful Father?

God's justice does not condemn you when you confess; it declares you forgiven because of Christ.

Father, I stop hiding and agree with You about my sin. Thank you that because of Jesus, You are faithful to forgive me and just to declare me clean. Please wash my heart and restore my fellowship with You. Amen.
