The Measure of Your Love

Jesus makes a shocking link between great sin and great love. He is speaking to Simon the Pharisee, a man who believed his own righteousness set him apart. The woman’s extravagant love was not the cause of her forgiveness. It was the proof of it. Her actions were the visible evidence of a heart that understood the immense weight of the debt she had been spared. Jesus holds her up as the standard. By contrast, Simon felt he needed little forgiveness. He saw himself as mostly good. As a result, his affection for Jesus was small and formal. He performed none of the basic duties of a host. This verse is a spiritual diagnostic. It reveals that our capacity to love God is directly tied to our awareness of how much we need His grace. For the original listeners, this turned their world upside down. It suggested that a repentant sinner could possess a greater love for God than a respected religious leader.

It is easy to be like Simon. We look at our lives, compare ourselves to others, and think we are doing fairly well. We keep a tidy ledger of our good deeds and minimize our sins. But this kind of thinking starves our love for Christ. It keeps our affection for Him polite, but small. God is not asking you to feel worthless. He is inviting you to be honest about your great need for a great Savior. The woman in this story understood her brokenness. When Jesus met her with grace instead of judgment, her heart overflowed with gratitude. Her love was not a duty; it was a response. It was the natural result of being set free from a debt she could never pay. Today, you can trust God with the truth of your own heart. You do not have to pretend to be strong or self-sufficient. He already knows your every failing and loves you completely. When you stop minimizing your sin, you can finally appreciate the full magnitude of His forgiveness. That is where great love is born. What debt are you still trying to downplay, preventing your heart from overflowing with love for Him?

Lord Jesus, forgive me for thinking my sin is small and my need for You is manageable. Help me to see the true depth of my debt so I can understand the incredible height of Your grace. May my life become an overflow of love for You. Amen.
