You Are Already Full

Do you feel spiritually inadequate today? The believers in Colossae certainly did. They were being told that Jesus was a good start, but not enough. To be truly spiritual, they needed to add special knowledge, strict rules, and mystical experiences. These teachings made them feel like they were missing something vital. Paul writes to correct this dangerous idea. He declares that since Jesus is the complete fullness of God in a human body (Colossians 2:9), believers are therefore made complete *in Him*. There is no spiritual ingredient you lack. There is no higher level you must achieve. All the spiritual resources of the Godhead are yours because you are united to Christ. He is the head over every competing power or philosophy. Nothing and no one can offer you anything that He has not already provided. Your spiritual wholeness is not a future goal to be attained but a present reality to be enjoyed.

Have you ever felt like your faith is a project you have to manage? That if you just read more, prayed harder, or served better, you would finally feel spiritually secure? That is an exhausting way to live. It is also not the gospel. God does not hand you a do-it-yourself kit for spiritual growth. He unites you to His Son. Your standing before God does not depend on your effort but on Christ's finished work. When God the Father looks at you, He sees the completeness of His own Son. You are hidden in Him. This means you can stop striving to be acceptable. You are already accepted. You can stop trying to earn what you have already been given freely. The Christian life is not about adding to what Christ has done. It is about learning to live out of the fullness He has already placed within you. What burden of spiritual self-improvement can you lay down today, trusting that you are already complete in Him?

Live today not toward a state of fullness, but from a state of fullness that you already possess in Christ.

Father, thank you that my spiritual life is not a performance. Forgive me for trying to add to the finished work of Jesus. Help me to rest in the truth that I am already and completely filled in Him. Amen.
