The Astonishing Name He Gives

Have you ever felt like you did not belong? John begins with a command: 'See'. He is not asking for a quick glance but for you to fix your attention on a staggering reality. The Father’s love is not just given; it is 'lavished'. This word pictures an extravagant, almost reckless outpouring. It is not measured or earned. It is a flood of grace given freely from the Father's heart. The result of this love is a new identity. We are 'called children of God'. In the ancient world, a name signified one’s very essence and status. For John to say God gives us this name is world altering. Then, as if to erase any doubt, he declares, 'And that is what we are!' This is not a future title you hope for, but a solid, present reality. Your identity as God's child is a fact, sealed by His love. This new family status also explains our relationship with the world. The world does not recognize us because it never recognized our elder brother, Jesus (John 15:18). Our spiritual DNA, our family resemblance to the Father, makes us strangers here. Our sense of belonging comes not from the world's acceptance, but from the Father's call.

Friend, God does not just tolerate you or put up with you. He is not a distant, reluctant father. The Bible says He lavishes His love on you. He pours it out in abundance, holding nothing back. This is the foundation of who you are. It is not based on your performance last week or your plans for tomorrow. It is based entirely on His unchanging, gracious character. He chose to love you. Because He calls you His child, you can approach Him with full confidence today. You are not an employee trying to earn favor or an orphan hoping for a handout. You are a son, a daughter, with a permanent place at His table. This truth changes everything. It means your worth is secure in His love. Your future is certain in His hands. Your belonging is not up for debate. Today, you will face voices that tempt you to doubt this. The world, and even your own heart, will try to label you by your weaknesses or your achievements. But the Father gives you a name that silences all others. You can trust Him with your identity. How might your day look different if you walked through it truly believing you are His beloved child?
