looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. — Hebrews 12:2
Hebrews 12:2
Observation
Have you ever wondered what kept Jesus on the cross? This verse tells us exactly what it was: joy. He looked past the agony and the public humiliation of the cross. He saw something on the other side that made it all worthwhile. His focus was not on the pain of the present but on the reward of the future. He endured the cross and despised its shame because He knew that through His suffering, He was purchasing your redemption. He is now seated in the place of ultimate honor, at the right hand of God (Heb. 12:2).
Reflection
Jesus gives you a pattern for your own pain. He does not ask you to pretend your struggles are not real. He shows you how to look beyond them. God has a joy set before you, too. It is the joy of being with Him, whole and healed for all eternity. You can trust Him with your suffering today because He has already walked that path for you. He understands. His faithfulness on the cross is your guarantee of His faithfulness in your life right now. What joy has God set before you that can give you strength for today?
Sit With This
When you feel pain today, intentionally look past it to the joy of seeing Jesus face to face.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for enduring the cross for me. Help me fix my eyes on the joy You have set before me, not on my present troubles. Give me Your strength to endure with faith, knowing you are with me. Amen.
Did You Know?
Crucifixion was designed by the Romans not just to kill, but to inflict maximum public shame. For Jesus to 'despise the shame' was a powerful rejection of the world's values.
