Galatians 5:25

Keeping in Step

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. — Galatians 5:25

Galatians 5:25

Observation

Does your spiritual life feel more like a list of rules or a living relationship? Paul presents a powerful truth here. He is not giving another law to follow. He is stating a logical conclusion. If the Holy Spirit has given you new life, then it only makes sense to let that same Spirit direct your life. This is the heart of his letter to the Galatians. They were being tempted to trade the freedom of the Spirit for the bondage of religious rule-keeping. Paul’s statement is a pivot point. After describing the beautiful fruit the Spirit produces, he gives the practical instruction for how to cultivate it. It is not by trying harder, but by aligning more closely. The life of a believer is not meant to be a solo effort. It is a moment by moment cooperation with the Holy Spirit. The source of our life must also be the guide for our living. This simple verse dismantles any idea that we are saved by the Spirit but sanctified by our own effort. The same grace that saves you is the grace that sustains and guides you each day.

Reflection

It is easy to believe that God is interested in the big decisions of your life but not the small, ordinary moments. But this verse tells a different story. God has given you His Spirit not just for salvation, but for companionship. He wants to be involved in every detail. Your life in Christ is not a sprint you run on your own; it is a walk you take with Him. He sets the pace. He knows the path. Your only job is to keep in step with Him. Think about what that means for you today. It means you are not alone in your challenges. It means you do not have to rely on your own wisdom for that difficult conversation or that complex task at work. The Holy Spirit is with you, ready to lead. Your part is to learn to listen, to be responsive. He often speaks in quiet nudges, not loud commands. He leads with peace, not pressure. God is faithful. You can trust that as you turn your attention to Him, He will guide your feet. He will help you take the next right step, and then the next one. This is not about perfection, but direction. When you get out of step, He is right there to help you find the rhythm again. What small area of your life today can you intentionally surrender to His leading?

Sit With This

In your next small decision, pause and ask: 'Spirit, what is the step you want me to take right now?'

Prayer

Father, thank you that I live by your Spirit. Forgive me for trying to walk in my own strength. Help me to keep in step with you in the small moments of this day. Amen.

Did You Know?

Roman soldiers were famous for their disciplined marching. Paul’s audience would have immediately understood the imagery of “keeping in step” as a call to disciplined, coordinated alignment with a divine commander.
