You Belong to the Light

Who you are determines what you do. Paul is not giving a command here; he is stating a fact about your identity. He says you *are* children of light and children of the day. This is a present reality for every believer in Jesus Christ. This identity is not something you achieve. It is something you have been given. For the believers in Thessalonica, a city full of idol worship, this was a radical claim. It meant they no longer belonged to the world's system of spiritual darkness. Paul defines you by what you are, and then by what you are not. The contrast is absolute. You are not of the night. You are not of the darkness. There is no middle ground. In the ancient world, day was for work, community, and clarity. Night was for sleep, secrecy, and danger. Paul uses this simple, universal reality to explain a profound spiritual truth. Your entire nature has been changed. You have been transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God's beloved Son (Colossians 1:13). This is your new, unshakeable reality.

There are days you may not feel like a child of the light. A past failure, a current struggle, or a lingering temptation can make you feel like you belong to the shadows. But God's Word speaks a truth over you that is more powerful than your feelings. He looks at you, covered by the righteousness of His Son, and says, “You are a child of the day.” This is not a suggestion. It is your God-given identity. It was sealed at the cross and announced at the empty tomb. Because this is who you are, it ought to change how you live. A person who belongs to the day does not find comfort in the deeds of the night. Living in secrecy, dishonesty, or bitterness feels foreign to your new nature. God is not asking you to become something you are not. He is calling you to live in agreement with who He has already made you in Christ. You can trust Him. The same power that brought you out of darkness is available to keep you walking in the light. He who began this good work in you will be faithful to complete it. The darkness has no claim on you anymore. You are a child of God. You belong to the light. As you go about your day, what would it look like to make one choice that proves you believe this is true?

Today, I will make choices that align with my identity as a child of the light, not the darkness from which I was rescued.

Father, thank you for rescuing me from darkness and calling me your child of light. Help me to believe this truth today, especially when I am tempted to live in the shadows. May my life honor the new name you have given me in Jesus. Amen.

The phrase “children of…” was a common Semitic idiom. To be a “child of” something meant you were characterized by it. So, “children of light” means your very nature is defined by light.
