Kept by His Love

Have you ever felt your love for God growing cold? Jude writes this urgent command not to people who need to earn God's love, but to those who already have it. The danger for the original readers was deception. False teachers were trying to lure them away from the truth, so this instruction was a matter of spiritual survival. To 'keep yourselves in the love of God' means to remain in the safe territory of His love, to live in the experience of it. This is not a suggestion but a command for active preservation. It is a conscious, moment by moment choice to stay connected to the source of love. Jude then links this present duty to a future hope. We are to be 'looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ.' This hopeful expectation of Christ's return and the final gift of eternal life is the fuel for our perseverance. Our present faithfulness is anchored in the certainty of His future mercy.

Friend, God's love for you is not a fragile thing. It is not dependent on your performance or your feelings. It was secured for you at the cross by Jesus Christ. So when Jude tells you to 'keep' yourself in God's love, he is not asking you to work to make God love you. He is inviting you to live in the warmth and safety of a love that is already yours. Think of it like standing by a warm fire on a cold night. The fire is burning whether you are near it or not. But to feel its warmth, you must choose to stay close. You stay close by building yourself up in faith and by praying in the Holy Spirit, as the verse just before this says (Jude 1:20). You intentionally turn your face toward Him. You remind yourself of His promises. You look forward with confidence to His mercy. This is not anxious striving; it is restful dependence. You can trust Him. The same God who saved you by His grace is faithful to keep you by His power. His love is your secure home, and His mercy is your certain destination. How can you intentionally stay close to the warmth of His love today?

Father, thank you that your love for me is secure in Christ. Help me to actively guard my heart and stay close to you today. I wait with hope for the final mercy of Jesus. Amen.
