God Is Not in a Hurry

Have you ever felt that God should have given up on you? David declares that this is not our Lord’s character. He begins by listing four beautiful attributes of God. He is merciful. He is gracious. He is slow to anger. He is abounding in steadfast love. This is not David’s new idea. He is quoting God’s own self-description given to Moses on Mount Sinai after the golden calf incident (Exodus 34:6). This was a foundational statement about who God truly is, especially in the face of Israel’s profound failure. For an ancient reader surrounded by impatient, violent, and demanding gods, this description was revolutionary. It revealed a God whose first response to sin is not wrath, but compassion. His anger is not His default setting. His default is mercy. This verse is not wishful thinking. It is a creed, a statement of fact about God’s fixed nature. It is who He has always been and who He will always be.

Think about the last time you failed. Did your heart fill with dread, expecting God’s immediate disappointment? This verse is God’s answer to that fear. He tells you directly that His nature is not to be quick-tempered. He is patient. He gives you room to breathe, to see your sin, and to turn back to Him. This is not because your sin is small, but because His mercy is so great. His slowness to anger is not apathy. It is an active, loving kindness, held out for you. It is the kindness that led Jesus to the cross. God absorbed the full force of righteous anger there so that He could offer you mercy forever. Today, you do not have to walk on eggshells with God. You can approach Him with confidence, not because of your own goodness, but because of His. He is not waiting for you to mess up. He is waiting with open arms for you to come home. Where do you need to trust His patient love over your fear of failure today?
