More Than a Theory

Have you ever known about someone without truly knowing them? David writes this psalm after a moment of profound crisis and deliverance (1 Samuel 21:10-15). He is not writing from a comfortable study, but from the raw reality of being protected by God in a desperate situation. His call to 'taste and see' is not a gentle suggestion. It is an urgent testimony, born from experience. For the original hearers, this was an invitation to move beyond the national stories of God's power to a personal, individual reliance on Him. The goodness David speaks of is not an abstract quality but God's active, saving intervention in the midst of fear and danger. This is an invitation to an encounter, not an intellectual exercise. The blessing is promised specifically to the one who 'takes refuge' in Him, which proves that this is about active trust, not passive belief. David is saying that God’s goodness is something you can personally verify through your own dependence on Him.

It is one thing to read that God is good or to hear someone else talk about His faithfulness. It is another thing entirely to experience that goodness for yourself. God does not want you to have a secondhand faith, built only on the stories of others. He invites you to a personal, firsthand relationship where His character becomes your reality. Perhaps you have been keeping God at a distance. You believe in Him, you may even serve Him, but you have not truly let His goodness touch the deepest needs of your life. You have studied the menu, but you have not yet eaten the meal. God is inviting you today to stop analyzing and start trusting. He wants you to bring your fears, your needs, and your anxieties to Him and let Him prove His faithfulness to you, personally. True faith is entrusting yourself completely to Him. It is an act of taking refuge. When you run to Him in your moment of need, you begin to 'taste' His peace. When you depend on Him for your daily provision, you 'see' His care. This is how His goodness moves from a doctrine you believe to a reality you live. Father, forgive me for being content to only know about You. I want to know Your goodness not just in my head, but in my heart and my life. Help me take refuge in You with this specific situation today. Amen.
