The Two Pillars of Faith

What does it actually take to please the God of the universe? This verse gives a clear and direct answer. It states a foundational truth: faith is the only way to please God. Then, it immediately defines the essential components of that faith. It is not a vague or sentimental feeling. It is a faith with two solid pillars. First, you must believe that God exists. This is more than intellectual agreement; it is a settled conviction in His reality, His presence, and His power. It is the bedrock on which everything else is built. Second, you must believe in His character. Specifically, you must believe He is a “rewarder.” For the original audience facing hardship, this was a vital promise. God is not a distant, passive observer of your life. He is an active participant who sees your pursuit of Him. He responds to those who seek Him. This verse sets the terms for a relationship with God. It is a relationship built on trusting who He is and what He promises to do for those who come to Him.

So often, we can complicate what it means to walk with God. We think it requires a certain level of knowledge, a perfect track record, or a special feeling. But God, in His kindness, makes it very simple. He says the starting point, the very thing that pleases Him, is faith. And that faith rests on two truths you can hold onto today. First, believe that He is. Right now, in the room where you are, God is present. He is not a theory or a historical figure; He is the living God who knows you by name. When you feel alone or when circumstances seem chaotic, you can anchor your soul to this truth: God is. He is real, He is in control, and He is with you. Second, believe that He is a rewarder. This is not about earning His favor. You can never do that. This is about trusting His good heart. God sees you when you open His Word, when you whisper a prayer, when you choose obedience over convenience. Your seeking is never in vain. The greatest reward is more of Him: His peace, His guidance, His presence. Where do you need to trust His good and rewarding character today?
