A Prayer That Changes You

How often are your prayers about changing your circumstances? This prayer is about changing the person praying. The psalmist, surrounded by trouble and temptation, does not ask for rescue. He asks for something far more foundational. He asks God to make His promise firm in his life. He knows that his ability to live a life of reverent awe ('fear you') does not come from his own willpower. It comes from God's faithfulness. The entire structure of this prayer is built on dependence. He is not telling God what to do. He is asking God to do what God has already promised. This is a prayer that aligns the servant's heart with the Master's character. It recognizes that true obedience flows from a heart that is secure in the promise of God, not from a heart trying to earn His favor. The psalmist understands that a holy life is a response to a promise already given.

God has given you His word. It is filled with promises for your life, for your protection, and for your future. The most important thing you can do is ask Him to establish those promises in your heart. You see, this prayer is not about getting God to do something new. It is about asking Him to make real in your experience what is already true in His word. Your security does not come from your performance. It comes from His promise. When you feel your desires pulling you away from God, do not try to fight in your own strength. Instead, pray this simple prayer: 'Lord, establish your promise to me.' Ask Him to make His truth more real to you than your feelings. Ask Him to build your life on the rock of His faithfulness. He will do it. He is faithful to His word. When you pray His promises back to Him, you are reminding your own soul of who He is and what He has done. Your obedience then becomes a joyful response, not a heavy burden.
