The Ground Beneath Your Feet

Where are you standing right now? Paul has just declared that we have peace with God through Jesus Christ. Now he explains what that peace looks like in practice. Our access into God’s presence is not something we earned or achieved. It is something we have “obtained”. The verb tense suggests a past action with present, ongoing results. Jesus secured this access for us, and we entered it by faith. This access leads us into a specific place: “this grace”. It is a realm of unmerited, divine favor. Once there, we do not wander or stumble. We stand. For the believers in Rome, living in a world of shifting social status and allegiances, this was a radical truth. Their position before God was not dependent on their performance, wealth, or heritage. It was a fixed, secure standing granted by God Himself. This is not a future hope, but a present reality. Paul states this is the grace in which we stand now.

Think about the ground you are on today. Is it solid or is it shifting? So often, we try to find our footing on our own good behavior, our successes, or the approval of others. But that ground is like sand. One wave of failure or criticism can wash our foundation away. God offers you something entirely different. He does not ask you to build your own platform to reach Him. Through Jesus, He has already brought you into His presence. He has placed you in His grace. This is not a temporary visit. It is your new, permanent address. You stand there. You are not on probation. You are not at risk of being evicted if you have a bad day. Your standing is not based on your ability to hold on, but on His powerful grip that holds you. This is why you can have a deep and settled joy. It is not a joy based on perfect circumstances, but on a perfect position. You are secure in the Father’s love, held firm by His grace. What would change for you today if you truly believed that your footing is absolutely secure in Him?
