The Grace That Builds You

And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. — Acts 20:32

Acts 20:32

Observation

What holds you together when everything seems to be falling apart? The apostle Paul is leaving the Ephesian elders, men he loves deeply. He knows they will face fierce opposition and false teaching. His final instruction is not a complex strategy or a new program. Instead, he entrusts them to the two most powerful and reliable resources in the universe: God Himself and the word of His grace. Paul is not just offering good advice; he is handing them over to a person and a promise. He says this word is able to do two specific things. First, it can build them up. It provides the strength, stability, and structure needed to stand firm in faith. Second, it guarantees their inheritance. This is not something they earn, but a gift secured for them, a place among all God's holy people. For those first-century leaders, this was their ultimate security.

Reflection

It is easy to feel weak and unqualified. Life can wear you down, and your own failures can leave you feeling spiritually fragile. You may look for strength in your own efforts, your discipline, or your knowledge. But Paul points you to a better source. He commends you, right now, to the word of God's grace. This isn't just the Bible as a book of rules, but as the living message of what God has done for you in Jesus Christ. His grace is not a one-time transaction at salvation. It is the ongoing power that builds you up today. When you feel like you cannot go on, His grace provides the next stone for the foundation. When you feel you have no future, His grace reminds you of the inheritance that can never be taken away. This inheritance is your secure position in God's family, sealed by Christ. You can trust God's word to do this work in you. It is not dependent on your feelings or your performance. It is dependent on His faithfulness. Where do you need God's grace to build you up today?

Sit With This

Today, rest in this truth: God’s grace is actively building you up, even when you cannot see the progress.

Prayer

Father, thank you that I am not left to build my life on my own strength. Please use your word of grace to build me up where I am weak and remind me of the secure inheritance I have in Jesus. Amen.

Did You Know?

The act of 'commending' someone was a formal legal and social term, like entrusting a valuable treasure or a vulnerable person to a completely trustworthy guardian for safekeeping.
