Speak Truth to Your Soul

Have you ever felt like a stranger in your own heart? The psalmist does. He finds himself in a conversation not with God, but with himself. He confronts his own soul with two sharp questions, asking why it is so downcast and disturbed. He doesn't let his feelings have the last word. Instead, he issues a direct command to his inner self: Hope in God. He then anchors this command in a confident declaration based on past experience. He knows he will praise God again because God has always been his help and his salvation. This is an active, willful choice to preach truth to his own feelings.

Your feelings of despair are real, but they do not define reality. God’s truth does. The psalmist teaches you to take charge of your inner world. You are to speak to your soul as a parent would to a frightened child. Early believers like Augustine saw this as a vital spiritual battle, where your faith must command your feelings to align with what is true about God. You have a history with Him. Remember His past faithfulness. Remind your soul of the times He has delivered you. That is your evidence for today. Your hope is not a wish; it is a firm expectation based on the unchanging character of your God. What past faithfulness of God can you declare to your soul right now?

Remind your soul today of one specific time God was your help, and declare that He will be your help again.

Father, my soul is often cast down and my thoughts are in turmoil. Help me to speak Your truth to my own heart and command it to hope in You. You are my salvation and my God, and I will praise You. Amen.
