Psalm 119:105

Just the Next Step

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. — Psalm 119:105

Psalm 119:105

Observation

Have you ever wished God would just show you the whole map? The psalmist here describes something far more intimate. He pictures two kinds of light: a lamp for his feet and a light for his path. A lamp for the feet shines on the very ground you are about to step on, preventing a stumble in the immediate dark. A light for the path shows a little further ahead, but not the entire road. In a world without streetlights, this small, personal flame was all a traveler had to navigate uneven terrain. God's Word gives immediate, sufficient guidance for the present moment.

Reflection

God's Word is not meant to give you a five year plan. It is His daily provision of light for you. Just enough for today. Just enough for this decision, this conversation, this temptation. Early Christians taught that Scripture keeps our feet from the snares of sin, one choice at a time. God is faithful to give you the light you need for the step you are on right now. You do not need to be anxious about the steps you cannot yet see. You can trust Him. What is the one step He is asking you to take in His light today?

Sit With This

Trust the small lamp God has given you for this single step; it is more than enough.

Prayer

Father, thank you that You do not leave me in the dark. Help me to trust the light of Your Word for today's steps, instead of demanding to see the whole road. Guide my feet in Your truth. Amen.

Did You Know?

Ancient Israelite lamps were simple, wheel-thrown clay saucers with a pinched spout to hold a flax wick. Fueled with olive oil, they provided only a small, flickering light for personal use.
