Held in an Unbreakable Grip

Do you ever feel your grip on God is slipping? Jesus speaks these words to a hostile crowd, clarifying who His true sheep are. He makes a stunning, twofold promise to those who belong to Him. First, He gives them eternal life, a quality of life that begins now and never ends. He states plainly, “they will never perish” (John 10:28). This is an absolute declaration. Second, He guarantees their security. He says no one, absolutely no one, can snatch them from His hand. This imagery was powerful to His listeners. A shepherd’s hand represented his strength, his ownership, and his commitment to protect his flock from predators. To make the promise even more certain, Jesus brings in the Father. He says the Father, who gave the sheep to Him, is “greater than all” (John 10:29). And no one can snatch them from the Father’s hand either. This is not just one hand of protection, but two. It is the unbreakable, overlapping grip of the Son and the Father, working together to secure their own.

Your security in Christ does not depend on how tightly you can hold onto Him. It depends entirely on how tightly He holds onto you. On your best day, your grip is still weak. On your worst day, His grip is just as strong. Your salvation is not an achievement you must maintain; it is a gift you have received. Jesus says, “I give them eternal life.” He did not say you must earn it or keep it polished. He gives it, and He secures it. Think about this. You are held in the Son’s hand. That hand is then held in the Father’s hand. There is no power in heaven or on earth, no failure in your past, and no fear in your future that can break that hold. His grip is not based on your performance but on His promise. His hold on you is a reflection of His character, not yours. When you are tempted to doubt your standing with God because of your weakness, stop looking at your own hands. Look instead to His. His hands are strong enough to hold you forever. How would you live today if you truly rested in His secure grip, instead of striving in your own strength?

Live today not in the fear of falling away, but in the quiet confidence of being held by the One who is greater than all.

Father, thank You that my eternal security rests in Your powerful hand and the hand of Your Son. When I am filled with doubt, remind me that Your grip is unbreakable. I rest in Your faithful promise today. Amen.
