A Heart Set on Wisdom

Does the speed of life ever leave you breathless? This psalm, a prayer of Moses, begins by contrasting God’s eternal nature with our own fragile existence. After acknowledging human frailty and God’s righteous anger against sin, the prayer pivots. It does not ask for more days, but for the wisdom to live the days we have. This is not a morbid countdown to death. It is a desperate plea for perspective. Moses, who led a nation for forty years in the wilderness, understood the brevity of life. He saw an entire generation pass away. His request to “number our days” is a cry for God to teach His people to see time as He does: a precious, limited gift. The goal is not just to be aware of the clock ticking, but to gain something of lasting value from that awareness. The aim is to get “a heart of wisdom,” a heart that understands what truly matters in the light of eternity.

Friend, God is not trying to frighten you with the shortness of your life. He is inviting you into a deeper trust. He wants to free you from the tyranny of the urgent and the pressure to achieve everything this world values. When you ask Him to teach you to number your days, you are really asking Him to change your perspective. You are asking to see your schedule, your relationships, and your resources through His eyes. This kind of wisdom does not come from human effort. It is a gift that comes from a heart surrendered to God. It is the wisdom that recognizes our utter dependence on Him for every single breath. When we live with this awareness, our priorities begin to shift. We stop clinging so tightly to things that will fade and start investing in what will last forever: our relationship with Christ and our love for others. God is faithful to give this wisdom to you. He does not want you to live in frantic anxiety but in focused peace, knowing your days are in His hands. You can trust Him to guide you in how to use this very day for His glory.
