The Beginning of All Wisdom

Where can you find wisdom when everything falls apart? Job chapter 28 is a beautiful poem about the search for wisdom. Man can mine the earth for gold and silver. He can tunnel through mountains and find precious stones. But wisdom cannot be found in the ground. It cannot be bought. The deepest oceans do not know its location. It is hidden from the eyes of all living things. After this exhaustive search, the chapter concludes with God’s own declaration. He is the one who knows the way to wisdom because He is its source. And He reveals its location not in a place, but in a posture. Wisdom is not a thing you find, but a way you relate to God. It begins with the “fear of the Lord” and is proven by turning from evil. For Job’s friends, wisdom was a formula. For Job, it became a relationship founded on reverence for a God he could not understand but was forced to trust.

The world will tell you that wisdom is about having more information. It is about getting a better degree, making smarter investments, or having the right answers. It is a tool for you to control your life and get ahead. But God defines it very differently. He says real wisdom begins when you stop trying to be in control and simply stand in awe of Him. This is not a wisdom you can earn. It is a gift you receive when you humble yourself. When pressure mounts and you do not know what to do, intellectual knowledge will not be enough. Your own cleverness will fail you. The only thing that will hold you steady is a reverent trust in the God who holds all things together. This wisdom is not about knowing all the reasons behind your circumstances. It is about knowing the character of the One who is sovereign over them. This is the wisdom that Jesus modeled. He lived in perfect reverence for His Father, and His entire life was a turning away from evil. Through His sacrifice, He has become for us wisdom from God (1 Cor. 1:30). Trusting Him means you can stop striving to figure everything out. You can simply rest in His presence and obey His next instruction. How might you choose to honor God with your next decision, rather than just relying on your own understanding?

True wisdom is not found in having the right answers, but in bowing before the right God.

Father, quiet my soul and replace my desperate search for answers with a simple, reverent awe of You. Help me to see that turning from evil is the wisest path I can walk today. Let my life be defined not by what I know, but by my love for You. Amen.
