The Prayer That Pleases God

What would you ask for if God offered you anything? Young King Solomon stands before God, feeling the immense weight of his new responsibility. The future of a nation rests on his shoulders. He could have asked for long life, riches, or victory over his enemies. These were the things kings were supposed to want. They were the visible signs of power and success. But Solomon's request reveals a heart that understood true strength. He asks for an internal quality, not an external possession. He prays for a heart that can govern well and “distinguish between right and wrong.” This is a stunning display of humility. Solomon knew he was not equipped for the task on his own. He was not trying to impress God or his people with his own ability. Instead, his prayer was a public declaration of his dependence. He was asking for the one thing he knew he could not generate himself: divine wisdom for the good of others.

Every day, you and I are faced with decisions. Some are small, some carry great weight. The world tells you to be smart, to trust your own judgment, to get ahead. But God invites you to a different way. He invites you to pray Solomon's prayer. To ask for a hearing heart is to admit you do not have all the answers. It is a quiet surrender of your own plans and a turning toward His. This kind of wisdom is not about being the cleverest person in the room; it is about being the most attentive to God. It is a gift that flows from a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ, who is the very wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:30). True discernment does not come from a formula but from fellowship with the Father. You can trust that when you ask for wisdom to honor Him and to love others well, He is faithful to give it.
