Come Boldly to the Throne

Do you ever feel you need to clean up your life before you can pray? The Bible invites you to a throne. For the original readers, a king’s throne was a place of power, law, and judgment. Approaching a monarch uninvited could cost you your life (Esther 4:11). But this is not a throne of judgment. It is specifically called the “throne of grace.” Its entire nature is defined by God’s unmerited favor. This is the seat of God’s authority, yet it is where He has chosen to dispense kindness. The invitation is to “come boldly.” This was a shocking command. Under the Old Covenant, access to God’s immediate presence was terrifying and severely restricted. Only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies once a year, and only with the blood of a sacrifice. But because Jesus, our Great High Priest, offered Himself, the way is now open for all believers. We are not just permitted to enter; we are encouraged to come forward with confidence. The purpose of our coming is twofold: to obtain mercy and find grace. Mercy is for our past failures; it is God not giving us the punishment we deserve. Grace is for our present needs; it is God giving us the help we do not deserve. He knows you need both, and His throne is the supply for every need.

Your access to God the Father is never based on your performance. It is not based on how good you have been this week or how well you have prayed. Your access was purchased and is permanently secured by Jesus Christ. Because He is your perfect High Priest, the throne of God is a throne of grace for you. This means that the very moment you feel most unworthy is the moment this invitation is most needed. When you have failed, when you are weak, when you feel you have nothing to offer, God does not turn you away. He says, “Come.” He is not waiting for you to fix yourself. He is waiting with a Father’s heart to give you the mercy and grace you need right now. So today, you do not have to hold back. You can speak to Him plainly about your struggles, your sins, and your fears. Your confidence is not in yourself; it is in Jesus. He is your reason for being there. Because of Him, you will always be welcomed. You will always find help. What fear or failure will you confidently bring to His throne of grace today?

Your High Priest has already opened the door; you only need to walk through it.

Father, thank you that I can come to you without fear because of Jesus. I ask for your mercy for my failings and your grace to help me with the challenges I face today. I trust you to provide exactly what I need. Amen.

The “throne of grace” echoes the mercy seat, the golden lid on the Ark of the Covenant where God’s presence dwelt and where sacrificial blood was sprinkled once a year for the forgiveness of sins.
