The Gift You Could Never Earn

Have you ever tried to earn a gift? The very idea seems wrong. Paul is writing to believers in Ephesus, a city where people tried to earn favor from many gods through rituals and sacrifices. He makes a statement that turns their world upside down. He says that salvation is not something you achieve. It is something you receive. He states plainly that you have been saved “by grace... through faith” (Ephesians 2:8). Then, to make his point absolutely clear, he adds a critical detail. He says, “and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.” The entire system of salvation, from the grace that makes it possible to the faith that accepts it, is a gift. There is no room for human contribution or pride. Paul wants to completely eliminate the human tendency to boast. He concludes this thought by saying salvation is “not of works, that no one should boast” (Ephesians 2:9). For the Ephesian audience, this dismantled their entire religious framework. Salvation was not about climbing a ladder to God through human effort. It was about God, in His mercy, reaching down to humanity.

God wants you to be absolutely secure in your relationship with Him. He does not want you to live in constant fear, always wondering if you have done enough to please Him. That is why He made salvation a gift. A gift is not earned. If you work for something, it is a wage. If you deserve something, it is a reward. But God’s salvation is neither of those things. It is a gift, given freely because of His immense love for you. This truth sets you free from the heavy burden of performance. You do not have to spend your days striving to be good enough for God. In Christ, you already are. The good things you do are not a way to earn salvation. They are a way to say thank you for the salvation you have already received. Your relationship with God is not based on your ability to hold on to Him. It is based on His unbreakable promise to hold on to you. Today, you can rest in that truth. You can trust that your standing with God is secure, not because of what you have done, but entirely because of what Jesus Christ has done for you. How does it change your day to know your salvation is a settled gift, not a wage you must keep earning?

Father, thank you for the gift of salvation that I could never earn and do not deserve. Forgive me for the times I try to add my own works to what Christ has already finished. Help me to simply rest in Your grace today. Amen.
