Acts 20:24

Your Assigned Race

But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. — Acts 20:24

Acts 20:24

Observation

Have you ever felt your work was small compared to someone else's? Paul is on his way to Jerusalem, knowing chains and afflictions await him. Yet his focus is not on his safety or his suffering. He considers his life worthless apart from one single objective. He must complete the specific task he received directly from the Lord Jesus. His life's value is measured by his obedience to that one assignment, not by its length or comfort.

Reflection

God has not called you to run someone else's race. The pressure to compare, to measure your ministry or your faithfulness against another's, does not come from Him. Paul understood his assignment was unique. John Chrysostom once noted that God does not ask for a great work, but a faithful one. Your specific course was designed for you by the Lord Jesus. He asks only that you run it with your eyes on Him. What ministry, what task, has He given you to complete today? Trust Him with the outcome.

Sit With This

What is the one task God is asking you to be faithful in today, regardless of what anyone else is doing?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, forgive me for looking at the paths of others and feeling envy or inadequacy. Help me to see the value and beauty in the specific course you have set for me. Give me strength to finish my assignment faithfully. Amen.

Did You Know?

This emotional speech was not given in a synagogue, but on a beach at Miletus. Paul knew he would never see these beloved Ephesian elders again, making his words a final, urgent charge.
