Romans 15:7

The Pattern for Our Welcome

Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. — Romans 15:7

Romans 15:7

Observation

Who are you tempted to keep at arm's length? Paul writes this command to a church divided over non-essential issues. He doesn't tell one side to win the argument. Instead, he commands a mutual welcome. The pattern is not our own preference but the radical welcome of Christ. He welcomed us in our sin and weakness. The purpose of this welcome is not our comfort, but that God alone would be glorified. Our unity points directly to His character.

Reflection

Think about the moment you understood Christ welcomed you. He did not wait for you to be perfect. He took you as you were. This is the model for all your relationships. This welcome, as John Chrysostom noted, is the very medicine that heals the church’s divisions. God is not asking you to agree with everyone. He is asking you to make room for them, because He first made room for you. His grace is the foundation of your hospitality. Can you trust His welcome of you enough to extend it to another?

Sit With This

Who is one person you can intentionally welcome this week, not based on what they offer you, but on how Christ has welcomed you?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you for welcoming me when I was your enemy. Forgive me for when I close my heart to others you have welcomed. Help me to open my hands and my home for your glory alone. Amen.

Did You Know?

In the Roman world, inns were often dangerous and disreputable. Christian hospitality provided a vital network of safe lodging for traveling believers, making it a critical, practical expression of faith.
