You Are the God Who Sees

No one feels more invisible than a person who has just run away. Hagar was in an impossible situation. A pregnant Egyptian slave, she was mistreated by her mistress Sarai and had fled into the unforgiving desert (Gen 16:6). In that culture, she had no rights, no protector, and no future. She was an outcast, utterly alone and without value in the eyes of the world. It is in this place of absolute desperation that God meets her. The Angel of the LORD, a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ, finds her by a spring. He knows her name, her story, and her pain. He does not condemn her for running; He speaks a promise over her and her unborn son. Hagar’s response is one of the most remarkable in all of Scripture. This foreign slave, who had no claim on the covenant promises, looks back at God. In an act of profound worship, she gives Him a new name based on her experience of His character. She sees the One who first saw her.

Perhaps you feel unseen today. You may feel that your struggles, your quiet acts of faithfulness, and your whispered prayers go completely unnoticed. You might feel overlooked at work, taken for granted at home, or simply lost in the crowd. Hagar’s story is in the Bible for you. It is a permanent record that your God is not a distant deity, too busy to be concerned with your life. He is the God who seeks out the one who is hurting and alone. Hagar called Him *El-Roi*, 'the God who sees me.' This was not a theological statement she learned in a class. It was a personal testimony born from a place of pain. She discovered that God’s sight is an act of intimate, personal care. You can trust Him with your invisibility. His seeing you is the beginning of His provision for you. He does not just notice your trial; He enters into it with you and has a purpose for you within it. The gaze of God upon you is a gaze of fatherly love, secured by His Son, Jesus, who saw you from the cross. How might your day change if you truly believed that the God of the universe sees you, right now, with love?

Rest in this truth today: The God who names every star also knows your name and sees the quiet details of your life.

Father, thank You for being El-Roi, the God who sees me when I feel completely invisible. Help me trust that Your gaze is one of love, not condemnation. Remind my heart today that I am never, ever out of Your sight. Amen.
