But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. — Isaiah 40:31
Isaiah 40:31
Observation
Have you ever felt too tired to even pray? This promise is for those who are at the end of their own resources. Isaiah is speaking to a people worn down by exile, whose national strength is broken. He is not offering them a formula for self-improvement. He is offering a divine exchange: their exhaustion for God’s strength. The promise unfolds in a sequence of escalating power, yet it ends with simple endurance. First, soaring like an eagle, an image of effortless power and a high perspective above all trouble. Second, running without growing weary, a picture of sustained, high-capacity effort. But the final promise is perhaps the most precious. It is the promise to walk and not faint. This is the grace for the long, slow, ordinary Tuesday when you do not feel like soaring or running. It is the strength for the daily grind. God’s power is not just for the mountaintop moments but for the long road home.
Reflection
God knows you get tired. He is not surprised or disappointed by your weakness. In fact, your weakness is the very place He has chosen to display His strength. This verse is not a command to try harder. It is an invitation to trust more fully. Waiting on the Lord means you stop relying on your own plans, your own energy, and your own understanding. You actively look to Him as your only source of help. Notice that the strength is not your own. It is a renewal, a direct gift from Him. He does not just give you a little boost to keep you going. He exchanges your failing strength for His limitless supply. When you feel you cannot take another step, He promises you will walk and not faint. When the pace of life feels overwhelming, He promises you can run and not grow weary. His grace is sufficient for this very moment. Your exhaustion is not a sign of failure; it is an opportunity for faith. God is inviting you to let go of the burden of self-reliance and receive the strength that only He can give. What is the one area today where you need to stop striving and start waiting on Him?
Sit With This
Where in your exhaustion today can you actively hope in God's promise to renew your strength, even just enough to walk and not faint?
Prayer
Father, I am weary and my strength is gone. I choose to wait on You, trusting that You will exchange my weakness for Your power. Help me walk one more step without fainting. Amen.
Did You Know?
Eagles were known to fly into storms, using the powerful winds that battered other creatures to lift themselves even higher. This adds a beautiful layer to the promise of mounting up with wings.
