Where Do You Pasture Your Flock

The Song of Solomon is an intimate love poem, understood by the church as a picture of Christ's love for his people. After expressing deep devotion, the bride asks her beloved shepherd where he rests his flock at noon, the hottest part of the day (Song of Solomon 1:7). She fears being like a veiled, wandering woman among the other shepherds, her identity and purpose unclear.

Have you ever felt this way in your walk with God? You know you love Him with your whole being, yet you feel lost, uncertain of His specific will for you in the heat of a trial. Her question is not a cry of doubt, but a plea for direction that flows from a secure love. The soul who has tasted the Lord's goodness is never satisfied, but always asks, 'Show me where you rest,' longing for ever-closer communion. Your feeling of being lost is not a sign that your love is weak, but an invitation to ask the Good Shepherd for specific guidance. Where is He calling you to find rest in Him today?

Intimacy with God is not the end of seeking, but the very reason for it.

Lord Jesus, my Good Shepherd, my soul loves you. Yet sometimes, in the glare and pressure of the day, I don't know where to find you. Please don't let me wander. Tell me where you are, that I might come and find my rest in your presence alone. Amen.

The reference to being 'like one who veils herself' could have several meanings in the ancient world. Depending on the context, a veiled woman could be in mourning, a prostitute, or simply someone unrecognized, which is why she is so anxious to be found by her specific shepherd.
