When You Do Not Know

Have you ever been paralyzed by a decision? James is writing to believers scattered by persecution, facing trials that tested the very core of their faith (James 1:2-4). They were confused and unsure of what to do next. Into this uncertainty, James gives a command that is also a promise. The instruction is not to think harder or try to find a smarter person. The instruction is to ask God. Notice the character of the God we ask. He gives generously to all. There are no qualifications you must meet, no level of spiritual maturity you must attain. The offer is for any of you. And He gives without reproach. This means God will not shame you for your lack. He will not sigh with disappointment that you have to ask again. He is not a reluctant giver. He is a Father who delights to provide for His children what they need most. The promise is direct and sure: and it will be given him. This is not a maybe. It is a certainty rooted in the goodness of God Himself. For the original audience, this was a lifeline. It meant that even in the most disorienting circumstances, they had direct access to the One who holds all things together.

So often, when you face a problem, your first instinct is to figure it out. You make a list of pros and cons. You call a friend. You search for answers online. You rely on your own strength and your own understanding. But your Heavenly Father is waiting, ready to give you exactly what you need. He is not holding His wisdom at a distance, waiting for you to prove yourself worthy. His arms are open. The beautiful truth of this verse is that asking is the only requirement. Asking is an act of humility. It is you admitting, 'Father, I cannot do this on my own. I do not know the way forward. I need You.' That posture of dependence is exactly where God meets you. He does not want your self-sufficiency. He wants your trust. He is a generous God. He is not looking for a reason to withhold His help, but for every opportunity to pour it out. Today, you can lay down the burden of having to know it all. You can stop striving and simply ask. God's wisdom is not a puzzle to be solved, but a gift to be received. Will you open your hands to receive what He so freely offers?

Today, I will trade my anxious planning for a simple prayer: 'Lord, what is Your wisdom here?'

Father, I confess that I often rely on my own understanding instead of asking You. Forgive me for my pride, and teach me to turn to You first. I ask for Your wisdom today for the path ahead. Amen.

James is often called the 'Proverbs of the New Testament.' Like Proverbs, it is filled with short, direct commands for living a life of practical, godly wisdom.
