Washing in a Muddy River

Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean? — 2 Kings 5:12

2 Kings 5:12

Observation

Naaman, a commander of great renown but afflicted with leprosy, comes to Israel with expectations of a dramatic cure (2 Kings 5:11). The prophet Elisha doesn't even meet him, sending a messenger with a simple, almost insulting, command: wash seven times in the Jordan. Naaman’s rage reveals his deep-seated pride; he expected a transaction worthy of his status, not a command demanding humble obedience. His healing was contingent not on a grand miracle but on a simple act of faith.

Reflection

How often do you, like Naaman, prescribe to God how He ought to work in your life? We expect grand solutions, yet He often offers healing through simple, humble means: an apology, a quiet prayer, an act of service. The muddy Jordan prefigures the simple water of baptism, where our true cleansing is found not in the water itself, but in humble obedience to Christ. Where might God be asking you to stoop and wash today?

Sit With This

God’s greatest gifts are often wrapped in the plain paper of simple obedience.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, forgive my prideful heart that wants to dictate the terms of my own healing and growth. Help me to trust your wisdom and to obey your simple commands, even when they feel beneath me. Make me humble enough to receive your grace. Amen.

Did You Know?

The rivers of Damascus, Abana and Pharpar, were famous in the ancient world for their clear waters. In contrast, the Jordan River was often murky, making Naaman's offense even more pointed.
