This Is Who I Am

God Himself tells you His name. Are you listening? Moses stands on Mount Sinai for the second time. The first set of stone tablets, bearing God’s law, lie shattered at the foot of the mountain, destroyed by Moses in anger over Israel’s golden calf idolatry. The covenant is broken. Israel deserves judgment and abandonment. Moses has pleaded for the people and has made a bold request: “Please show me your glory” (Exodus 33:18). In response, God does not reveal a physical form. He reveals His character. He hides Moses in the cleft of the rock and passes by, proclaiming His own name. The very first attributes God uses to define Himself are mercy and grace. Before He mentions justice or judgment, He establishes that His core identity is rooted in compassion and loving-kindness. This is not just a list of qualities. This is God’s personal introduction, given in the shadow of humanity’s greatest failure. He is telling Moses, and all of Israel, that His primary response to their sin is not wrath, but a patient, faithful love that is ready to forgive.

Friend, have you ever felt you have gone too far? Have you ever believed the lie that your latest failure is the one that will finally exhaust God’s patience? If so, I want you to listen carefully to what God says about Himself. He does not define Himself by your sin. He defines Himself by His own character. Notice the order. He is first “merciful and gracious.” His anger is “slow.” His love is “abounding.” This is not who God tries to be. This is who He is. You do not have to persuade Him to be patient or convince Him to be loving. That is His very nature. This is the character we see perfectly in Jesus Christ. He looked at sinners with compassion. He touched the unclean with grace. He endured the cross with a love that would not quit. Today, you can trust this God. You do not need to hide from Him or try to clean yourself up before approaching Him. His arms are not crossed in judgment. They are open in mercy. What fear of rejection are you carrying that this truth can silence today?

When you are tempted to run from God today, remember that His first step toward you is always one of mercy.

Father, thank you for not being the god I invent in my fear, but for being the God You truly are. Help me to believe that Your mercy is greater than my sin and to rest in Your faithful love. Lord, calm my anxious heart. Amen.
