The Power You Can Trust

Imagine speaking to God while your city burns around you. This is Jeremiah’s reality. He is in prison, and Jerusalem is surrounded by the unstoppable Babylonian army. All hope is lost. In this moment of total despair, God gives him a strange command: buy a field. It is a foolish investment in a land that is already lost. But Jeremiah obeys. His prayer in this verse is not a question. It is a declaration of faith spoken in the dark. He begins by reminding himself of who God is. He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Jeremiah intentionally uses the phrase “outstretched arm,” which every Israelite would immediately connect to God’s saving power in the Exodus. He is grounding his present crisis in God’s past faithfulness. His statement, “Nothing is too hard for you,” is not wishful thinking. It is the firm conclusion that follows from remembering God’s character. It is an anchor of truth thrown into a sea of chaos.

God’s power is not a wild, untamed force. It is the same steady, creative power that brought order from chaos and light from darkness. It is the power of a loving Father. We often stand in awe of His might, like watching a storm from a safe distance. But Jeremiah shows us we can run into that power for shelter. He shows us that God’s power is personal. You may feel like you are in an impossible situation today. Your health, your family, or your finances may feel like a city under siege. It is easy to feel that God’s world-creating power is for big things, not for your specific problem. But God’s outstretched arm is not just a distant fact of history. It is the same arm of the Father that reaches for you now. It is the same arm of Jesus, stretched out on the cross to rescue you. Your confidence today does not need to rest on your circumstances improving. Your confidence rests on the unchanging character of your Creator and your Redeemer. The God for whom nothing is too wonderful can work wonders in your life. What impossible thing are you trusting Him with today, knowing His arm is outstretched for you?

Anchor your confidence not in a change of circumstances, but in the unchanging character of the God who made everything.

Lord God, you are the Maker of all things, and yet you see me in my small corner of the world. Help me to trust your outstretched arm more than I fear my circumstances. Remind me that nothing is too wonderful for you. Amen.
