The Measure of Your Love

What standard do you use to treat other people? Jesus gives His disciples a simple, radical rule. This is not a suggestion for a better society; it is a command for citizens of a different kingdom. He sets our own deepest longings for kindness, respect, and mercy as the non-negotiable standard for our actions toward others. It is a proactive command, demanding initiative. It assumes that you know what goodness feels like and requires you to give that very thing away, first.

This command can feel impossibly heavy if you try to live it in your own strength. But God never asks you to do what He does not empower you to do. The good news is that this is not about earning His love, but responding to it. God has already done for you in Christ what you could never do for yourself. As John Chrysostom saw it, this rule becomes a daily rhythm of grace, not a burden. Because you are secure in His love, you are free to love others without needing anything back. How might your relationships change if you truly believed God has already given you everything you need?

In each interaction today, ask: what kindness would I truly wish for if I were in their place, and how can I offer that right now?

Lord Jesus, thank you for showing me the ultimate kindness at the cross. Help me to stop measuring what others deserve and simply give love from the security I have in You. Make my hands and my words a reflection of Your heart today. Amen.

Many ancient teachers had a version of this rule, but it was almost always negative: 'Do not do to others what you don't want done to you.' Jesus' positive command to 'Do' is far more demanding.
