The Holiness God Requires

Some commands in Scripture are not gentle suggestions. This verse presents two linked commands: pursue peace and pursue holiness. The writer treats them as active, ongoing responsibilities for every believer. They are not separate goals but two sides of the same coin. A life set apart for God will naturally produce peace with others. The second command carries a weight that should stop us in our tracks. The writer states plainly that without holiness, no one will see the Lord. This is not an optional characteristic for the spiritually elite. It is the necessary condition for entering God’s presence. For the original audience, who were growing weary and tempted to drift from their faith, this was a clear and sobering reminder of what is at stake. The ultimate hope of the Christian is to see God, and holiness is the path to that glorious end. The writer uses the word “strive” or “pursue,” which implies diligent effort and continuous action. This holiness is not a passive state we fall into. It is something we actively chase after, empowered by the Spirit. This does not mean we earn our salvation through our efforts, but that a genuine, saving faith will always produce the fruit of a life pursuing God’s character.

Friend, this verse can feel heavy. It might sound like an impossible standard you can never reach. But please hear this: God never gives a command without also providing the grace and power to obey it. He is not setting you up for failure. He is inviting you into the joy of a life that reflects His own heart. Your holiness is not something you have to manufacture on your own strength. It is the work of the Holy Spirit inside of you, conforming you to the image of Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29). Your part is to cooperate with Him. It means making daily choices, small and large, to turn from sin and to turn toward God. It means choosing His way when your flesh wants to go another. This is not about achieving perfection overnight, but about your direction. Are you moving toward Him? God is faithful. He who called you is holy, and He is the one who will make you holy (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24). You can trust Him with this process. You do not need to fix everything at once. You only need to take the next step of obedience He is asking of you today. Where is the Holy Spirit prompting you right now to live a life more set apart for Him?
