The God Who Does Not Change

Have you ever felt that God has forgotten you? The people of Israel certainly did. After returning from exile, their hopes were low and their worship was hollow. They questioned God's justice and His love. It is into this atmosphere of doubt that God speaks these powerful words. This is not a detached, philosophical statement about God's nature. It is a deeply personal and relational promise. God connects His unchanging character directly to Israel's survival. The reason they 'are not consumed' by His judgment is because He does not change. His covenant promises, His mercy, and His faithfulness are fixed. If God were like a human, shifting with moods or frustrations, His people would have been destroyed long ago for their persistent sin. But His steadfast love endures. This verse was a rock for a weary nation. It reminded them that their security was not in their own performance, but in the absolute stability of God's character.

In a world where everything shifts like sand, God's character is your firm foundation. Your feelings change. Your circumstances change. The opinions of others change. But God does not. He is the same loving, holy, and just Father today as He was yesterday. His promises to you in Jesus Christ are not temporary. They are sealed by His unchanging nature. This truth brings incredible comfort. When you feel weak, you can lean on His unchanging strength. When you feel unloved, you can rest in His unchanging affection for you, purchased at the cross. His grace for you this morning is just as available as it was yesterday. You do not have to wonder what version of God you will get today. He is constant. This also brings a serious and beautiful reality. Because He does not change, His hatred for sin does not change. But neither does His gracious provision for it in His Son. You are called to depend on His unchanging grace, not test His unchanging holiness. He is utterly trustworthy in every way. Knowing this, how can you confidently place your anxieties for today into His steady hands?

Because God's character is fixed, His promises are certain. How does this truth anchor your heart when your circumstances feel chaotic?

Father, thank You that You are my rock. When my heart is unsteady, help me to stand on the truth of Your unchanging character. I trust Your faithful love for me today. Amen.
