The First Step to Knowing

Solomon, a king famed for his wisdom, begins his instruction to his son not with a technique for study, but with a posture of the heart (Proverbs 1:1-6). He declares that the starting point, the very foundation of all true knowledge, is a right relationship with God Himself (Proverbs 1:7). This creates a stark division: the wise build their lives on this foundation, while fools, defined by their rejection of it, despise God's wisdom.

Our world tells you that knowledge is power—something you acquire through degrees, data, and sheer effort. Solomon says knowledge begins with a surrender of your own intellectual sovereignty. This isn't about being unintelligent; it's about recognizing that all facts and experiences only make sense when oriented around their Creator. This is not the fear a slave has for a master, but the loving fear a child has of disappointing a good father. This is the awe that leads not to hiding from God, but to running toward Him, who in Christ is the very wisdom we seek. Is your pursuit of knowledge and success rooted in awe of God or in your own ambition?

Father of Lights, I confess how often I rely on my own understanding and chase the world's definition of success. Forgive me for building my life on foundations other than you. Grant me a heart of yir'ah—a reverent awe that places you at the center of all I think, learn, and do today. Amen.
