The Father Is Running

The Father was not waiting on his porch. Before the son could even deliver his rehearsed apology, the father acted. He saw his son while he was still far away. This tells us the father was watching, hoping, and waiting for this very moment. His first emotion was not anger or disappointment, but compassion. This was not a passive feeling. It compelled him to do something scandalous for a man of his stature: he ran. In that culture, a patriarch would never run. It was undignified. Yet, love for his son overrode any concern for his own honor. He cast aside his dignity to close the distance between them. The embrace and the kiss were not just gestures of affection. They were public declarations of full acceptance and restoration. The father did not wait for an explanation or a promise of better behavior. His welcome was unconditional, initiated solely by his love and compassion. The restoration happened before the confession was even spoken.

Perhaps you feel you are a long way off from God today. You may be carrying shame or rehearsing the speech you think you need to make before you can come home. But look at the Father’s heart in this verse. His eyes are already on you. He is not waiting for you to clean yourself up or perfect your apology. His heart is moved with compassion for you right now, exactly as you are. God the Father demonstrated this posture perfectly when He sent His Son, Jesus. He did not wait for us to find our way back. He ran to us. He closed the infinite distance between heaven and earth to embrace us in our brokenness at the cross. You do not have to earn this welcome. It is already yours. The Father’s arms are not crossed in judgment; they are open in welcome. His love is not based on your performance but on His character. He is a good and merciful Father who delights in restoring His children. Will you stop keeping your distance and let Him run to you today?

Picture the Father running toward you, and ask yourself what keeps you from falling into His embrace.

Father, thank you for not waiting for me to be perfect. Help me believe that you are running to meet me with compassion, not condemnation. I turn toward you now. Amen.
