The Day Without Tears

Have you ever felt a sorrow so deep you thought it would never end? Here, the apostle John sees the final reality for all who are in Christ. This is not a slight improvement on our current world. It is a complete and total reversal of everything broken by sin. God makes a fourfold promise, naming the great enemies of human existence: death, mourning, crying, and pain. He addresses the finality of death, the emotional grief of mourning, the audible expression of crying, and the physical sensation of pain. Nothing is left out. Every category of human suffering is named and then declared obsolete. The reason for this new reality is that “the old order of things has passed away.” The entire system we live in, a world subject to decay and brokenness since the fall (Romans 8:20-21), will be gone. For the first-century believers facing persecution, this was not an abstract idea. It was the anchor for their souls. It was the certain hope that their present suffering was temporary and would be personally and permanently ended by God himself.

God sees your tears. He does not turn away from them, and He does not dismiss them. This verse promises that one day, God Himself will perform the most tender and personal act. His hand will wipe every single tear from your eyes. This is not the action of a distant, unfeeling god. This is the intimate gesture of a loving Father who has been with you through every moment of sorrow. This future promise gives you strength for today. The pain you may be feeling right now is real, and it matters to God. But it does not have the final word. Its power is limited, and its time is short. You can endure today’s hardship with a quiet confidence because you know its expiration date has been set by the King of all creation. Your ultimate future is not one of coping with pain, but of complete freedom from it. Your joy will not just be restored; it will be made complete in His presence. So I encourage you to trust Him with the hurt you are carrying. Name it before Him. You can entrust it to the One who did not just promise to comfort you, but to remove the very cause of your grief forever. In light of this unbreakable promise, can you trust His goodness in your life today?
