The Certainty of His Coming

Have you ever looked at the world and asked God, 'How much longer?' That is exactly where the prophet Habakkuk stood. He saw the wickedness and violence in his own nation of Judah and cried out for God to act. God’s answer was shocking. He would use the ruthless Babylonian empire to judge His people. Confused and distressed, Habakkuk went to his watchtower to wait for God’s reply to his second complaint. God’s response in chapter two is not a detailed battle plan but a declaration of His character and a call to a certain kind of life. He gives Habakkuk a vision and commands him to write it down plainly (Habakkuk 2:2). This vision has an appointed time. It will not prove false. Though it seems to linger, God commands the prophet to wait for it. He assures him, 'it will surely come, it will not delay' (Habakkuk 2:3). God’s timing is perfect. Then God draws a sharp contrast. There is the proud person, whose soul is not right within him. And then there is the righteous person. The defining characteristic of the righteous is not their ability to understand God’s plan, but their faith. In the middle of national chaos, personal confusion, and divine delay, the one who is right with God will live by trusting Him.

It is difficult to wait when you cannot see what God is doing. Perhaps you are in a season of waiting right now. You have prayed, you have sought the Lord, and still, the answer seems delayed. Your circumstances may be screaming that God has forgotten you or that His promises have failed. In these moments, God's word to Habakkuk is His word to you. The promise He has given you has an appointed time. It is not subject to your feelings or your timeline. It is anchored in the faithfulness of God Himself. To live by faith means you choose to believe God’s Word over your own sight. It is a daily decision to trust His character when you cannot trace His hand. The Lord is not asking you to have a perfect understanding of His plan. He is asking you to have a simple, dependent trust in Him as a person. He is good. He is sovereign. He is faithful. The delay you are experiencing is not a denial. It may be the very tool God is using to deepen your trust and build a steadfastness in you that cannot be shaken. Your security is not found in the fulfillment of the promise, but in the one who made the promise. He is with you in the waiting. He will sustain you. You can trust Him to bring His word to pass at exactly the right moment. How might your posture change today if you truly rested in the certainty of His coming?
