The Anchor That Holds

Have you ever felt like you were drifting? The Bible says you have an anchor. The writer of Hebrews gives us this picture of a hope that is both “sure and steadfast.” This is not a flimsy, lightweight anchor. It is strong, reliable, and it will not break under pressure. It keeps your soul from being tossed and driven by the winds of circumstance or the waves of doubt. But notice where this anchor is cast. It is not dropped into the shifting seabed of this world. This hope, this anchor, “enters into the inner place behind the curtain.” This is a direct reference to the Most Holy Place in the Jerusalem temple. It was the one place on earth where God’s presence dwelled in a special way. Only the high priest could enter, and only once a year. But your anchor, your hope, is fixed there permanently. It is secured in the very presence of Almighty God. This means your security is not based on anything here on earth. It is held fast in heaven itself.

Your feelings will lie to you. They will tell you that you are alone, that you are losing your grip, that God is distant. The world will tell you that your faith is foolish and your hope is empty. But God’s Word tells you a different story. It tells you that your soul is anchored. This hope is not something you manufactured. It is a gift, secured by God’s own unbreakable promise. Think about what this means for you today. When you feel anxious, your anchor holds. When you are confused, your anchor holds. When you are weak, your anchor holds. Your security does not depend on the strength of your grip, but on the reality of the anchor and the place it is fixed. It is fastened to the throne of God. Jesus Christ Himself has gone before you into that holy place, securing your connection to the Father forever. You are safer than you feel. Your future is more certain than your present circumstances suggest. So let the storms come. Let the winds blow. Your soul is not adrift. It is tethered to the unshakable reality of God Himself. Will you choose to believe what God says about your security, even when your feelings say otherwise?

Because your anchor is in heaven, what earthly storm can truly move you from God's presence?

Father, thank you that my hope is not a flimsy wish but a firm anchor. When the storms of life rage, help me remember that I am held secure in Your presence. I trust You to hold me fast today. Amen.
